Round 8 Quarter Final of the National Cup
Judgemeadow Community College 0 vs 1 Sir Thomas Boughey High School
After a 75 mile journey to Leicester, the STB players were keen to get the game underway to continue their amazing run in the English Schools National Cup Competition. Tactics and strategies were discussed to stay disciplined and organised in the early stages to limit the space the Judgemeadow players had on the ball.
STB were playing into the wind in the first half. Judgemeadow had most of the possession as STB found it difficult to pass the ball fluently with the strong wind against us. Although Judgemeadow had three corners that were swung into the box, Aaron Ramsdale in goal, punched the ball to safety. At the other end, Ashley Lowe crossed for Callum Tunstall only for his shot to be deflected for a corner. Marcus Shaw combined well with Daniel Taylor which resulted in Marcus’s shot going just over the bar. Aaron Ramsdale in goal had no shots to save in the first half as the midfield and defence limited Judgemeadow to shots from 30 yards which all missed the target.
After a positive first half it was important that STB took advantage of Judgemeadow’s failure to convert possession into chances. 2 minutes into the second half STB did just that. A ball forward from midfield saw Oliver Finney close down the fullback and win possession of the ball. A great run to the by-line ended with a well measured cut back to Elliot Spooner, who calmly slotted the ball into the corner for a 1-0 lead. STB continued to diffuse any threat Judgemeadow had and it was STB who looked to press home their advantage with Oliver Finney hitting the crossbar from 30 yards with an excellent volley, whilst in the last few minutes the Judgemeadow goalkeeper made another good save from Oliver Finney again.
In the final seconds of the match, Judgemeadow won a corner. The goalkeeper came up and the Judgemeadow fans were cheering them on. The delivery was good however the defence stood firm and cleared the ball effectively. The referee signalled the end of the game and STB progress through to the Semi Finals for the first time in the school’s history. The next match will be against St. Francis Xavier’s College from Liverpool.
An excellent team performance from the players who followed the instructions and tactics of Mr Matthews and Mr Stevenson to the letter.
Man of the match voted for by Judgemeadow PE Teacher was Oliver Finney.
