Semi Final of the County Cup

Sir Thomas Boughey 2 vs 1 Wolgarston High School

The game started evenly matched with both teams working the ball well through the midfield areas. Wolgarston looked dangerous down the flanks however they were unable to create any attacking opportunities, as once again the holding midfielders and defence stood firm to deny them. STB had the only shots on target in the first half. Oliver Finney’s swerving effort was tipped over the bar whilst Callum Tunstall scuffed an effort which was easily saved by the keeper. Although STB had the better chances the half ended 0-0.

STB picked up the tempo in the second half, moving the ball wider to stretch the game. Ben Green read the game well and intercepted the ball on a number of occasions. STB won a corner which was swung in by Oliver Finney. Jeff Jolley found space and headed the ball into the bottom corner to give STB a well deserved lead. STB continued to look dangerous. Elliot Spooner ran powerfully into the box on a number of occasions however he was denied by the Wolgarston defence and goalkeeper. With time running out Henry Thirwall played a great through ball to Oliver Finney who ran through and calmly slotted the ball into the corner of the goal to give STB a 2-0 lead. With 1 minute to go, Wolgarston won a free kick. STB failed to organise themselves at the back post and a Wolgarston player brought the ball down with the use of an arm or two and struck the ball in off the post to give STB a tense final minute. From the kick off the referee blew the final whistle to give STB the victory and a place in the county cup final.

Man of the match could have gone to a number of players however it was Ben Green that was given it for his excellent reading of the game and solid defensive work throughout the match.
