GCSE Catering Examination 2014

GCSE Catering Students prepare and serve Afternoon Tea.
GCSE Catering students have recently completed the practical examination for their Controlled Assessment Task, which is worth 20% of their overall GCSE. Their brief was to prepare, cook and serve 4 items for Afternoon Tea.
The students had previously researched the history of afternoon tea, which in recent years has become very popular. The students had practised making a number of items in class and then they decided which ones they wanted to make on the examination day.
The exams were held on 24th- 25th March. I was overwhelmed by the skills and technicality shown by the students. A wide range of items were made; from macaroons to marble cake, sandwiches to Swiss rolls, traditional Victoria Sandwich cakes to cheese and chive scones with cream cheese and beetroot! We would like to share some of the pictures with you.
Students worked so hard to achieve a quality outcome, it certainly isn’t an easy job completing the task within 2 ½ hours but each of them worked from a thorough timeplan. They had thought very carefully about the presentation of their dishes, many of them buying or borrowing fancy cake stands. Thank you to those teachers who came into the room to complete taste testing at the end of the exam, in order to give their feedback to the students!
Well done Year 10 – you should be very proud.
