Greenpower International Electric Vehicle Race Final
Posted: November 22nd, 2016
Following a successful race at Aintree earlier in the year, on Sunday 16th October, pupils from Sir Thomas Boughey High School took part in the Greenpower International Electric vehicle race final at Rockingham motorsport speedway. The team now named STB Spitfires in homage to the iconic 1940’s aircraft, entered their veteran racing vehicle, ‘Brian’.
Leaving school at 6.30 in the morning, the team made their way to Rockingham. On arrival at the pits Tayela Jarvis Dale, Chloe Myatt and Sarah Moore prepared Brian for scrutineering by the race judges and he passed with flying colours. At race start, 73 cars from all over the UK, Europe and the USA were lined up to race. Starting in 67th place the STB Spitfires had a tough challenge and to make things even more difficult, the heavens opened, soaking the cars, drivers and pit crews alike. At the end of the first race, Brian – driven by Ben Underwood, Rob Breslin and Fergus Babb – had made up several places coming in 53rd. After a battery change and in dryer conditions, the girls did a great job in race 2. The drivers in race 2 were Tayela Jarvis Dale, Chloe Myatt and Sarah Moore; they brought Brian home to a respectable 54th place.
Team Captain Lauren Johnston was delighted with the performance of the team and is looking forward to starting the design and build of a brand new car for the 2017 season.
Following the success of the team so far, we are pleased to report that sponsors from industry and the community are pledging their support for 2017. The team would particularly like to thank engineer Mat Twigg from Renishaw who is working with them on their new car.
Meanwhile, Stafford Precision Engineering have pledged their support.
As we approach Christmas the team have been busy running a stall at the school Christmas Fair and are currently selling crafts to raise funds for next season’s car.
