Greenpower Race at Mallory Park
Posted: June 11th, 2018
On Wednesday 6th June, our students attended a Greenpower race at Mallory Park Leicestershire. The race was the culmination of this year’s KMF Young Engineer of the Year project.
Over the academic year, we have completely changed Reggie (our electric vehicle originally built from scratch last year). Meeting once a week on Wednesday evenings, Mr Beardmore and Renishaw Engineer Matt Twigg worked with the students in the team to change Reggie’s chassis – lowering and shortening it, developing a longer and lower front, top and aerodynamic rear and electronic dashboard.
At the same time, the team also built a second vehicle (‘Mitch’) based on a kit car. This also had modifications including new steering, brakes, drive train, bodywork and a carbon fibre seat.
On the race day (which saw 27 cars racing from Staffordshire and Stoke schools) Reggie started in pole position and achieved the fastest lap but sadly developed two punctures which resulted in an early Pit Stop. The team managed to get Reggie back out on the track and we made up 8 places, lapping many competitors. Meanwhile, Mitch initially performed really well and was in a strong position but towards the end of the 1.5 hour race we had to retire Mitch with flat batteries.
During the lunchtime break, Mr Beardmore, team members and supporting parents worked really hard to prepare the cars for race 2. Everyone was determined to do better.
Right from the start of Race 2, Reggie commanded a significant lead and once again achieved the fastest lap. Its lightweight and aerodynamic body gave us a clear advantage and by race end, Reggie was 12.6 minutes in front and final results showed that Reggie covered 3.20 miles more than the runner up with a total distance of over 38 miles achieved. Sadly Mitch’s batteries didn’t last despite a tactical gear change in the break – once again retiring in the last few minutes. We will be working hard to develop Mitch for the next race.
The team would like to thank our sponsors Newcastle Under Lyme College and KMF who generously funded new team overalls, T-shirts and baseball caps. We would also like to thank the parents who came to support us on the day.
Following the success of this race, we hope to take the cars to Croft later this month and to Rockingham in July.
